Up and Running

In the DenSo it looks like TravellPerkins.com is finally up and running. Special thanks to Chris Brogan for having a great personal site and inspiring me to finally do something with my “name” domain. When I first saw the trend developing, observing that we were knee deep in “Me-O-Mania” thanks primarily to MySpace a few years ago, I never had the slightest idea this day would come. I never really loved my birth name so I wasn’t compelled to run to GoDaddy for a “Triple Cashectomy.” I was however writing a lot of open source Java at the time and thought that I might one day become famous.

In the early days after the dot com bubble knowing enterprise Java was all the rage. I knew Struts, Java 1.4/ then 1.5, EJB. I knew enough to make the lives of others a little easier by writing clever abstractions and APIs. I was way too busy to ever have the time to write a book (at least I tell my self that), but through the course of my career from 1999-2006 I was in the zone. At the height of everything I actually started writing a Java blog, Swervespot.org, for a little bit. I gave blogging a rest though in 2007, it was a time of serious transition. Ultimately it lead up to this moment, unemployment ;) LOL, seriously, I’m going through my 30s trying to make it on my own. Got to see how it goes.

Working for a large organization has its perks, but I find that working for large organizations often times limits your reach to other people. Well at least enterprise software. It’s such a rush to be part of a larger community. I’ve always enjoyed roles where I can be in a position to amplify the success and effectiveness of others (Now you know why I like healer classes so much). Being out on my own I have more control over the outcome; I appreciate transparency, the Internet can give me that.

In my next post I’ll give you a heads up on what I actually used to get this blog up and running.

So what would you do with yourself if you had unlimited funds? What would your work be?

Well if I had unlimited funds I would fix all the problems the presidential candidates have been yacking about since the summer. I would do a hostile take over of big pharma, the oil companies, half of retail finance, GM, the top three coal companies and plant makers in the U.S and abroad… you get the idea. I would then move the chess pieces on the board so that the planet wins.

In the short term though I’m happy with bootstrapping and working with others with complimentary goals. It’s all about relationships.
